Law Enforcement Knows Who Killed a 72-Year-Old Man on Thanksgiving, the Victim’s Family Pleads Public For Information to Push Arrest
Family of Hureleyon McLean, Sr. Files Lawsuit Against Shooter, Apartment Complex Management that Could Have Prevented it
WHAT:
The family of Hureleyon McLean, Sr, a 72-year-old man fatally shot by his neighbor on Thanksgiving Day 2024, will hold a news conference to announce a wrongful death lawsuit against the Somerset Lakes Apartment Complex for negligent security and the shooter, the victim’s neighbor, Luke Hines Cawley.
The family will also make an emotional plea to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office and Broward Sheriff’s Office to file criminal charges and arrest Mr. Cawley, who was detained at the scene but has not been charged. He claimed self-defense.

BACKGROUND:
On Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2024, Hureleyon McLean, Sr. was shot and killed by his neighbor, LUKE HINES CAWLEY, during a dispute over loud music at the Somerset Lakes Apartment Complex in Lauderdale Lakes. The shooter claimed self-defense and has not been arrested. According to Mrs. McLean, her husband was unarmed and was shot moments after approaching Mr. Cawley about the music. She says Mr. Cawley also threatened her after the shooting.
This was a preventable tragedy. The McLean family says the apartment complex failed to address ongoing safety issues and ignored prior complaints about the shooter’s aggressive behavior.
