Orlando Halloween Mass Shooting Victims’ Families to Break Silence, File Lawsuit Over ‘Avoidable’, Deadly Attack
Parents of victims’ Tyrek Hill, Timothy Schmidt, joined by nationally renowned gun violence victim attorney, to hold news conference.
This will be Schmidt’s first public comments since losing his son.
WHO:
Family members of Timothy Schmidt Jr. and Tyrek Hill, the two victims killed in the November 1, 2024, mass shooting in downtown Orlando during a Halloween block party.
Attorneys from The Haggard Law Firm, a nationally recognized law firm specializing in gun violence civil litigation, including high-profile cases such as the Parkland Mass Shooting, University of Virginia Mass Shooting, and Dollar General Mass Shooting in Jacksonville.

WHAT:
A news conference announcing a lawsuit will be filed against:
- The City of Orlando
- The Orlando Police Department
- Multiple businesses and organizers involved in the 2024 Halloween event
The suit will allege negligence in crowd control, security planning, and overall public safety measures during one of Orlando’s largest annual events, which drew an estimated 75,000 attendees the night of the shooting. Ten people were injured that day, nine were victims of gun violence.

WHY:
On November 1, 2024, during Halloween festivities in downtown Orlando, a gunman opened fire in two separate incidents just minutes apart. Tyrek Hill and Timothy Schmidt Jr. were fatally shot, and seven others were wounded by gunfire. The shooting occurred amid a crowd of tens of thousands, raising serious concerns about inadequate security and preparedness by the city, police, and local businesses.
The families seek justice, accountability and systemic change to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
